Aswan and Abu Simbel

Aswan: Philae, Nubian Villages and the Nile

Egypt's most relaxed city: a temple moved stone by stone, colourful Nubian villages and sunsets by felucca.

Why it matters

Aswan sits at the First Cataract of the Nile, the ancient southern frontier of Egypt. The river is wider and calmer here, the pace slower, and the culture distinctly Nubian.

What to see

  • Philae Temple. The Temple of Isis was dismantled and rebuilt on Agilkia Island during the 1960s and 70s, when the Aswan High Dam flooded its original island. Arrive by small boat.
  • A felucca at sunset. A traditional sailing boat around Elephantine Island and Kitchener’s Island is the best hour of the day.
  • A Nubian village. Visit a family home for tea, hear about Nubian traditions and see the brightly painted houses.
  • The Unfinished Obelisk. A granite obelisk that cracked in the quarry, showing how such monuments were cut.
  • The Aswan High Dam. A short stop that explains the modern Nile.

Planning notes

  • Aswan is the base for Abu Simbel and for many Nile cruises that run between Aswan and Luxor.
  • Heat is the main constraint. Plan outdoor sights early and rest at midday.
  • The Old Cataract Hotel terrace is a classic place for a sunset drink.

How we plan it

We give Aswan two nights so there is time for Philae, a felucca and a village visit without rushing.
