St Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai

A sixth-century monastery and the mountain traditionally linked to Moses, with a sunrise climb for those who want it.

Why it matters

At the foot of Mount Sinai stands St Catherine’s Monastery, founded in the 6th century under the emperor Justinian. It is among the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries in the world, and it holds a famous collection of icons and manuscripts.

What to see

  • The monastery. Its basilica, icons and library are the heart of the visit. Visiting hours are limited, and the monastery is closed on certain days, so check before you plan.
  • Mount Sinai. Traditionally identified with the mountain where Moses received the commandments, it rises to about 2,285 metres. Many climb overnight to see the sunrise from the summit.
  • The landscape. Granite peaks and Bedouin-run guesthouses.

Planning notes

  • The climb takes a few hours on a path or on steps; camels can help the first stretch. Dress warmly because the summit is cold before dawn.
  • It is a long drive from Sharm el-Sheikh or Cairo, so plan an overnight.
