White Desert

The White Desert and Bahariya

Wind-sculpted chalk formations, starlit camping and a night in the Western Desert.

Why it matters

Between the oases of Bahariya and Farafra, the white chalk has been carved by wind into shapes that look like mushrooms, animals and icebergs. At sunset they glow gold and pink, and at night the stars are astonishing.

What to see

  • The White Desert National Park. The main formations, best at sunset and sunrise.
  • The Black Desert. Volcanic hills dusted with dark stone, passed on the way.
  • Crystal Mountain. A ridge of quartz crystal near the road.
  • The oasis towns. Bahariya has hot springs and small museums.

Planning notes

  • It is a four-by-four journey with a night of camping. Operators provide tents, mattresses, dinner and a campfire, but facilities are simple.
  • Roads and permits are managed by your operator.
  • Nights are cold in winter. Pack a warm jacket.

How we plan it

We offer this as a short, distinctive addition to a Cairo stay for travellers who want the desert at its most dramatic.
